Friday Girl (1940)

Ever (1934)

It’s not hard to see why: in Florida and New York, a broke rich man and a cynical journalist fall in love. Simple but brilliant, with sharp dialogue and electric chemistry, it’s a winning formula.

Much Ado About Nothing (1993)

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Kevin Kwan’s dazzling marital romance was brought to the big screen in 2018 and, believe it or not, the Jon M. Chu-directed film was the first time an all-Asian-American cast has appeared in a mainstream Hollywood romantic comedy. Led by Henry Golding and Constance Wu, who play a couple on their way to a wedding in Singapore, the film is, as befits the genre, full of surprises, good lines, and endless parades of gorgeous designer T-shirts.

Manifest Child (2014)

Marcel the Shell’s Jenny Slate gets behind the mic to play Donna, a self-deprecating 20-something comedian who gets dumped by her boyfriend and then gets knocked up by a one-night stand – all just in time for Valentine’s Day. An unofficial response to the male-driven films Superbad and Hangovers. Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo gave women a voice in Bridesmaids. A gritty comedy was written between the two of them that divided all camps. In 2012, they even won two Oscars. With Wiig and an array of funny women, including Melissa McCarthy. who received one of those nominations. The film breaks with tradition, focuses on female friendship, and achieves its own success.

Arrival in America (1988)

In this cult classic of the 1990s, Eddie Murphy is the king of comedy – literally and figuratively. He plays Prince Akeem, an African bachelor who leaves his culture and country for Queens.
